From an early age I have had a passion for style and design. I found a love for creating wooden furniture when undertaking an apprenticeship in traditional chair craftsmanship at the age of 18. After more than 25 years of creating commercial bespoke joinery pieces, building our dream home and raising our two amazing girls, PERCH was born.
Working in our hand-built workshop in the farming landscape of York gives me the tranquillity and presence in nature to be able to design and create the very best in stylish, modern and timeless furniture for your home.
Every piece of PERCH furniture has been handmade in our workshop in York, utilising traditional joinery techniques which have been honed over 25 years. We use a mix of English, European and American hardwoods which are all carefully chosen to suit our designs. Our lamps and legs are hand turned using traditional tools and techniques. The stains and oils we use are natural, extremely durable and safe for children and food use.
Each piece is treated using a traditional ebonising method; a craft technique that dates back centuries. The oak is first brushed with a natural solution of vinegar and iron which reacts with the wood’s rich tannins to draw out a deep black velvet tone. This alchemy of wood and metal transforms the grain into something striking, yet timeless, ensuring no two surfaces are ever quite the same.
To complete the process, we hand finish every piece with black tinted hard wax oil. This not only seals and protects and seals the oak but also enhances the depth of colour adding a suitable sheen that celebrates the natural character of the timber. The result is a surface that feels as good as it looks – rich, tactile and authentically hand crafted.
